A high-level ministerial delegation will visit Attappady, a tribal region in Kerala's Palakkad district, on Saturday to investigate mounting health challenges facing local residents. The visit comes after growing alarm over preventable diseases and inadequate medical infrastructure in the area.
V.K. Sreekandan, Member of Parliament representing the region, has highlighted multiple factors contributing to the health crisis. Sickle cell disease and anaemia have emerged as significant health concerns, with cases rising in recent years. Additionally, shortcomings in nutrition programmes and gaps in emergency medical services have compounded the problem, leaving vulnerable populations without adequate care.
The delegation's visit is expected to focus on assessing the current state of healthcare facilities and nutritional support systems in Attappadi. Officials will examine how government programmes are being implemented and identify systemic failures that have hindered service delivery to the tribal community.
Attappady, home to a substantial tribal population, has long faced infrastructural and healthcare challenges. The Saturday visit represents an effort by government officials to gain firsthand insight into conditions on the ground and explore remedial measures to address the health crisis.
