KOTA KINABALU — A minor earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale hit the Panginatan locality in Ranau on October 3rd, according to seismic monitoring data. The tremor was felt across surrounding areas of the district, prompting residents to briefly vacate buildings as a precautionary measure.
The quake occurred at a shallow depth, allowing residents in neighbouring districts to experience noticeable ground movement. However, initial assessments indicated no structural damage to residential or commercial properties in the affected region.
Seismologists characterised the earthquake as weak, falling well within the range of minor tremors commonly recorded across Sabah's geologically active zones. The incident marked another in a series of small-scale seismic events regularly monitored throughout the state.
Local authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere to standard earthquake safety protocols during aftershocks. The Malaysian Meteorological Department continued routine monitoring of seismic activity in the region.
