The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation passed a resolution on Tuesday prohibiting the slaughter of goats and other animals during religious festivals within residential housing societies and apartment complexes. The decision, put forward by the ruling BJP, aims to address escalating disputes among residents that have historically surfaced during religious observances and festive periods.
Alongside the slaughter ban, the civic body also enacted restrictions on feeding stray animals on public roads and thoroughfares. Municipal officials cited the need to maintain harmony within residential communities and prevent incidents that have previously disrupted neighbourly relations during religious celebrations.
The resolution represents an attempt by the local administration to balance religious practices with communal coexistence in densely populated residential areas. The measure follows a pattern of municipal interventions in matters affecting multi-faith communities, particularly during festival seasons when religious activities intensify.
Residents of housing societies have been advised to comply with the new guidelines. The civic body has indicated that violations may attract penalties as per municipal bylaws and local regulations.
