MIRI — Police in Miri are investigating a sophisticated identity theft scam that saw a local man lose RM97,000 after criminals gained access to his WhatsApp account and used his profile picture to deceive his spouse.

The victim reported the incident to authorities after discovering that fraudsters had contacted his wife through the compromised messaging platform, convincing her to make multiple financial transfers under the pretence of urgent business needs.

The scammers exploited the victim's trusted relationship with his family member, using his profile details and photograph to establish credibility before requesting funds. The deception went undetected until the actual victim became aware of the missing money.

The case highlights growing concerns about social engineering attacks targeting Malaysian households. Authorities advise users to enable two-factor authentication on messaging applications, verify unusual fund requests through alternative communication channels, and remain cautious when sharing personal information online.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police urging other potential victims of similar scams to come forward.
