Miti distances itself from Education Ministry's bumiputera equity policy shift

Miti said on Tuesday it has no information regarding the Education Ministry's move to remove bumiputera equity rules for tuition centre operators, emphasising that such policy matters are not within its jurisdiction.

The clarification comes after the Education Ministry announced plans to ease regulatory requirements for private tuition centres, including relaxing bumiputera shareholding mandates. The decision drew attention to potential coordination between multiple government agencies on business and education policy.

According to Miti's statement, responsibility for such economic and investment policies rests with the Economy Ministry rather than the trade and investment portfolio. The ministry stressed it was not consulted on or involved in the Education Ministry's announcement.

The move by the Education Ministry to relax equity rules is intended to encourage more private tuition operators to establish centres across the country, though the policy adjustment has raised questions about the government's commitment to bumiputera equity principles in the education sector.

Both the Education and Economy Ministries are expected to provide further clarification on the policy implementation timeline and specific exemptions that may apply to different categories of tuition centre operators.
