State health and pharmaceutical regulatory bodies in Mizoram have launched a comprehensive campaign to combat the proliferation of codeine syrup abuse, a widespread issue affecting the northeastern region. The enforcement drive includes strict monitoring of pharmaceutical outlets and stricter adherence to prescription-only regulations for cough syrups containing codeine.
Authorities have issued formal notices to chemists and medicine distributors, making clear that violations of pharmaceutical guidelines will result in suspension or permanent cancellation of business licences. The crackdown reflects growing concerns about the easy accessibility of codeine-based products, which have become a popular substance of abuse among youth in Mizoram and other northeastern states.
Codeine syrup abuse has emerged as a significant public health challenge in the region, with individuals consuming prescription-strength cough medicines to achieve intoxicating effects. Health officials have attributed the trend to inadequate regulation at retail chemist shops and insufficient monitoring of over-the-counter pharmaceutical sales.
The state government has also announced plans to enhance awareness campaigns about the dangers of codeine abuse and strengthen coordination between health departments and law enforcement agencies. Mizoram joins other northeastern states in recognising the urgent need for stricter controls on pharmaceutical products commonly subject to misuse.
