mm2 Asia has cleared a key hurdle in its corporate restructuring after obtaining creditor approval for its proposed financial recovery plan. The cinema chain, which operated under the Cathay Cineplex banner, will proceed with a placement of 16.3 billion new shares designed to generate S$15 million in capital.
Under the restructuring scheme, S$11.5 million of the raised funds will be allocated directly to settle creditor claims, addressing the company's outstanding obligations. The move represents a critical step for the entertainment operator as it navigates financial challenges in the region's post-pandemic recovery period.
The approval from creditors signals acceptance of mm2 Asia's turnaround strategy, which relies on equity dilution to restore financial stability. The company now moves forward with implementation of the plan, subject to any remaining regulatory or shareholder approvals required under Singapore's corporate governance framework.
The restructuring underscores ongoing financial pressures facing cinema operators across Asia as the sector adapts to changing consumer habits and competition from streaming platforms. mm2 Asia's recovery efforts will be closely watched as a barometer for the broader theatrical exhibition industry in Southeast Asia.
