MMA calls for universities, military hospitals in digital health push

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has called for a more comprehensive rollout of the country's electronic medical records programme, arguing that university and military hospitals should be included in the digital health network expansion.

In response to the RM1 billion allocation announced for the initiative, the doctors' group stressed that the budget allocation must extend beyond software implementation to encompass critical supporting infrastructure. The MMA emphasised that adequate funding should be dedicated to acquiring necessary medical equipment, ensuring reliable internet connectivity, and providing comprehensive staff training across all participating institutions.

The push reflects growing concerns within Malaysia's medical community about digital health equity. By including academic medical centres and military healthcare facilities in the network, the initiative could standardise electronic records across a broader spectrum of the healthcare system, improving data integration and patient care continuity.

The MMA's position underscores the reality that successful digital transformation in healthcare requires investment in foundational systems alongside technology. Without proper infrastructure support and workforce development, the doctors' group warned, even well-funded digital initiatives risk implementation gaps that could undermine their effectiveness.
