MMC considers health checks as part of media accreditation renewal

PETALING JAYA — The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) is examining mechanisms to integrate health check-ups with the press card renewal process, according to discussions held here on Wednesday. The proposal would encourage journalists to prioritise their physical wellbeing while maintaining their professional credentials.

Under the proposed framework, health screenings would be offered alongside accreditation renewals, though participation would remain voluntary rather than compulsory. The MMC believes this approach could foster a healthier media workforce without creating barriers to practice.

The initiative reflects growing recognition within the industry of occupational health concerns affecting journalists. Media practitioners often work irregular hours and face high-stress conditions that can impact their wellbeing, prompting the MMC to seek preventive health measures.

The council is currently studying how to implement the scheme effectively, including identifying partner healthcare providers and determining screening protocols. Officials indicated that further consultations with media organisations and industry stakeholders would precede any formal rollout.

The proposal aligns with broader efforts to professionalise journalism standards and support the welfare of media practitioners across Malaysia.
