MANILA — Nicolas Torre III, general manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, commenced a month-long leave of absence on Tuesday following his acknowledgment of violations related to improper use of the Edsa Busway.
The Edsa Busway is a dedicated traffic lane restricted to passenger buses, emergency vehicles on official duty, and automobiles operated by the country's five highest-ranking government officials. Torre's use of the lane fell outside these permitted categories, constituting a breach of traffic regulations he is responsible for enforcing.
The MMDA chief issued an apology for the infractions, taking personal accountability for the unauthorized access to the exclusive lane. The incident drew public attention as Torre's position oversees traffic management and enforcement across the metropolitan area.
Torre's temporary departure comes amid broader scrutiny of traffic policies and their implementation in Metro Manila. The leave is expected to conclude after one month, with Torre's return date not yet officially specified.
