MMEA seizes RM260m oil cargo in suspected illegal ship-to-ship transfer

KOTA TINGGI — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has apprehended two vessels suspected of conducting an illegal ship-to-ship transfer operation off Tanjung Buai, in a major enforcement action that resulted in the seizure of approximately RM260 million worth of oil cargo.

The agency detained both a tugboat and dredger operating in the waters near Kota Tinggi following intelligence about suspicious maritime activity. Upon inspection, MMEA officials discovered evidence consistent with an ongoing transhipment operation, where cargo is transferred between vessels in international waters to evade detection and regulatory oversight.

The seizure represents a significant interdiction of what authorities believe to be contraband oil that was being illegally diverted through the Straits of Johor. Such ship-to-ship transfers have become an increasingly common method employed by criminal networks to circumvent maritime regulations and customs controls in the region.

The detained vessels and seized cargo remain in MMEA custody pending further investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding potential charges or the origin and intended destination of the oil cargo.
