Mobile clinic to expand family planning access across remote Mindanao

The Philippines' first family planning floating clinic, called "Hiraya," aims to address healthcare gaps in remote areas of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) where residents have limited access to reproductive health services.

DKT Philippines Foundation partnered with the BARMM Ministry of Health to establish the initiative, recognizing the challenge of delivering consistent healthcare to island and coastal communities separated from main health facilities. The vessel-based clinic will carry medical personnel and contraceptive supplies to underserved populations across the region.

The floating clinic model represents an innovative approach to health service delivery in the Philippines, where geographic isolation remains a barrier to family planning access. By bringing services directly to remote residents, the program aims to reduce maternal health risks and expand reproductive choice among vulnerable populations.

The launch reflects broader efforts to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure in BARMM, a region with lower health service coverage than national averages. Officials expect the floating clinic to improve health equity while establishing a replicable model for reaching other isolated communities throughout the archipelago.
