Mobile operators seek approval for emergency credit scheme with nominal fee

Mobile network operators in Bangladesh have put forward a proposal to introduce an emergency balance service, allowing prepaid customers to access credit when their accounts are depleted. Under the scheme, subscribers would be able to borrow up to Tk 500 with a nominal service fee of Tk 10 deducted from their account.
The proposal represents an effort by operators to enhance customer retention and service accessibility, particularly for users who may face sudden communication needs despite insufficient balance. The emergency credit would function as a short-term facility, enabling subscribers to make calls, send messages, or use data services before topping up their accounts through conventional recharge methods.
The initiative requires regulatory approval from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) before implementation. Industry analysts suggest the scheme could benefit lower-income users who rely heavily on prepaid services but occasionally face cash flow constraints.
Details regarding repayment terms, validity period of the emergency credit, and whether the facility would be available to all prepaid subscribers or specific customer segments remain to be clarified. The proposal is expected to undergo review by telecommunications authorities in the coming weeks.
