The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the earthquake at 3:59 p.m. on September 17, with its epicenter located in Leyte province. The moderate-strength tremor was felt across portions of both Leyte and neighboring Samar.
Phivolcs assessments indicated the quake posed no threat of structural damage to buildings or infrastructure in the affected areas. The agency found no evidence suggesting significant aftershocks would follow the initial tremor.
The earthquake, classified as tectonic in origin, was the latest seismic event to affect the Eastern Visayas region, which sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent tectonic activity.
