Modi government has caused 'great damage' to Indian democracy: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi has accused the Modi government of inflicting substantial harm on India's institutional framework and democratic foundations during its tenure in power. Speaking ahead of the release of her memoir, 'Belonging: A Journey of Love', the former Congress chief highlighted the toll on the country's systems and governance structures.

"Over the last twelve years great damage has been done to the fabric of our country, our democracy and our institutions," Gandhi stated. She underscored that reversing this damage would not be an immediate process, requiring prolonged effort from political parties and stakeholders across the spectrum.

Despite her concerns about institutional degradation, Gandhi expressed confidence in India's democratic resilience. She noted that citizens are increasingly recognizing the challenges facing the nation and becoming restless about the situation. "I am optimistic and I know that the people of India will welcome a return to proper governance," she said.

The Congress leader's remarks come as the opposition continues to mount criticism against the current administration's record on democratic norms and institutional independence. Her comments reflect broader concerns within opposition circles about governance standards and constitutional safeguards during the past decade.
