Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated Pune Metro's Line 3, commonly known as the Pink Line, and laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors planned under Phase-II of the project via video conferencing. The development marks a significant milestone in the city's public transportation infrastructure expansion.
The Pink Line's opening adds to India's growing metro network, which has expanded substantially in recent years. According to government data, the country's metropolitan rail infrastructure has grown from 248 kilometers in 2012 to approximately 1,200 kilometers across multiple cities, reflecting increased investment in urban mass transit systems.
Pune Metro Phase-II will introduce four new corridors to complement the existing network, enhancing connectivity across the city and supporting the region's growing urban population. The expansion is part of a broader national initiative to develop modern, efficient public transportation systems in major Indian cities.
The metro network's expansion aligns with the government's focus on sustainable urban development and reducing traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. Cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad have also witnessed significant metro infrastructure development over the same period, establishing India as one of the world's fastest-growing metro networks.
