The Prime Minister formally opened a new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, significantly expanding the facility's capacity to handle increased air traffic to the union territory. The terminal development is part of broader efforts to modernise aviation infrastructure across India's mountainous regions and improve accessibility to Ladakh.
Complementing the airport upgrade, Modi also inaugurated the 298-kilometre Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, a strategic highway corridor that establishes an alternative transport route to Ladakh. The all-weather road is expected to reduce travel time and improve connectivity for residents and businesses in the region, particularly during winter months when traditional routes face closures.
The combined infrastructure investments, valued at Rs 3,350 crore, are expected to facilitate enhanced trade, tourism, and economic activity across Ladakh. Officials indicated the projects would generate employment opportunities and strengthen regional development initiatives in the union territory, which remains a priority area for central government infrastructure spending.
The projects reflect New Delhi's strategic focus on developing border regions and improving transportation networks in challenging terrain. Enhanced connectivity to Ladakh has been identified as critical for both civilian economic development and strategic purposes.
