Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin flagged off services on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor of the Chennai Metro, marking a significant milestone in the city's public transport infrastructure expansion. The stretch represents another phase in the metro system's ongoing development to ease congestion in the state capital.
Following the formal inauguration ceremony, Modi and Stalin boarded a metro train and travelled together on the newly commissioned line, witnessing firsthand the operational readiness of the extension. The joint ride underscored the collaborative approach between the central and state governments in advancing the rapid transit project.
The Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch adds to the growing network of the Chennai Metro, which has become a crucial transport artery for the city's residents and commuters. The new corridor is expected to enhance connectivity between key commercial and residential areas, reducing travel times and alleviating pressure on the city's road infrastructure.
The inauguration event was attended by senior officials and dignitaries from both the state and central administrations. The Chennai Metro project, which commenced operations in 2015, has progressively expanded its reach across the city with multiple phases of construction and commissioning.
