Addressing a gathering of Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc banner, Kharge doubled down on his prediction that the Modi-led government's days in power are numbered. The Congress chief's remarks underscore deepening tensions within India's political establishment over the legitimacy of the ruling dispensation.
Kharge levelled fresh accusations against the government, alleging that the BJP came to power on the basis of a mandate obtained through questionable means. He further claimed that Prime Minister Modi was actively protecting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suggesting impropriety in the election management process.
The Congress leader signalled that the Opposition coalition would intensify its campaign demanding Kumar's resignation, vowing not to relent until the official steps down from his position. The remarks reflect escalating friction between the ruling party and opposition parties over concerns regarding electoral conduct and institutional independence.
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of multiple opposition parties formed to counter the BJP's dominance, has increasingly focused its messaging on questions of democratic integrity and governance. Kharge's statements represent the coalition's attempt to mobilize support around these issues ahead of future electoral contests.
