MoEF Clears Puri Airport Project With Bird Risk Safeguards

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) has issued environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for the greenfield airport project planned for Puri in Odisha, marking a significant milestone for the infrastructure development initiative.

However, the approval comes with a key condition stemming from wildlife concerns. The Wildlife Institute of India had previously flagged potential risks posed by migratory birds from the nearby Chilika Lake, one of Asia's largest brackish water lagoons and a critical habitat for numerous avian species during migration seasons.

In response to these concerns, the MoEF has directed project authorities to commission a detailed bird hazard study from a reputed specialized institute. This assessment will evaluate the potential impact of migratory bird populations on airport operations and establish appropriate mitigation measures to ensure aviation safety without compromising wildlife conservation.

The Puri airport project, designed to improve air connectivity to the coastal region, will now proceed with the environmental framework in place. Authorities must complete the mandated bird hazard study and implement its recommendations before advancing to subsequent project phases.

The decision reflects India's effort to balance infrastructure development with environmental protection, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas hosting migratory bird populations that are protected under national and international wildlife conservation agreements.
