Punjab FC mounted a spirited challenge against the defending title holders in the semifinal clash, remaining competitive throughout the full duration of regular and extra time. The Shers created several threatening opportunities but ultimately fell short in the penalty shootout, ending their campaign in the tournament.
Mohun Bagan dominated possession in the opening stages, applying sustained pressure on the Punjab FC defence. The first meaningful chance arrived in the third minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte's strike took a deflection, though Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh remained alert to make the save.
The defending champions continued to probe for an opening five minutes later when Asish Rai connected with an aerial ball, subsequently laying off Lee Erwin with a first-time pass after Arshdeep advanced from his line. Punjab FC's defence responded swiftly to block Erwin's shot and clear the resulting danger.
Despite Mohun Bagan's attacking intent throughout the match, neither side managed to break the deadlock in open play. The intensity remained high as the contest extended beyond 90 minutes, with Punjab FC refusing to capitulate despite facing a superior opponent. The deadlock was eventually resolved from the penalty spot, where Mohun Bagan's greater experience proved decisive in their march toward another final appearance.
