Monaragala teacher jailed eight years for sexual abuse of student

Monaragala High Court Judge Nishantha Wijesekera handed down the eight-year sentence after the teacher, a mother of two, was found guilty of sexually abusing the schoolboy on multiple occasions. The victim was taken to the accused's home during the incidents that led to the charges.

In addition to the abuse charges, the court found the defendant guilty of obtaining obscene photographs of the minor. The evidence presented during the trial established a pattern of predatory behaviour by the educator towards her young student.

The conviction marks a significant case involving abuse of a position of trust within Sri Lanka's education system. The sentencing underscores the judiciary's commitment to protecting minors from sexual exploitation and holding adults accountable for such offences.

The case was handled by Monaragala High Court, which has jurisdiction over serious criminal matters in the Uva Province. The conviction follows investigation by relevant authorities into complaints regarding the teacher's conduct towards the student.
