SUBIC, Zambales — Wildlife authorities have successfully rescued a marbled water monitor lizard from the Subic Freeport Zone and transferred the reptile to a dedicated wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Luzon office announced Saturday.

The bayawak, as the species is commonly called in the Philippines, was recovered from within the freeport area and immediately secured by responding personnel. The rescue operation underscores ongoing efforts by environmental agencies to protect wildlife that may venture into human-occupied zones or face harm from urban development.

Upon arrival at the wildlife center, the monitor lizard will undergo a comprehensive health assessment to determine its physical condition and rehabilitation needs. Staff will monitor the animal's progress before determining appropriate next steps, which may include release into suitable natural habitat if the lizard is deemed fit for return to the wild.

The marbled water monitor is a native Philippine reptile species that inhabits freshwater environments including rivers, lakes, and marshes. Encounters with the species in urban or industrial areas such as freeports remain relatively uncommon, though rescue operations highlight the importance of protecting wildlife corridors and natural habitats in developed regions.
