The India Meteorological Department has officially announced the conclusion of the 2024 monsoon season, which brought precipitation 13 percent below the long-term average across the country.
Despite the overall shortfall, several regions are expected to experience continued rainfall activity through October 1. The southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are forecast to receive heavy downpours in the coming days, while the northeastern states may also see scattered showers as the monsoon trough gradually shifts.
In contrast, most of northern India, including the capital region of Delhi, is expected to experience dry weather conditions following the monsoon withdrawal. The below-normal monsoon rainfall during the season raises concerns for agricultural output and water availability in several parts of the country.
The meteorological department indicated that while the main monsoon system is retreating, residual moisture and weather patterns may continue to generate isolated precipitation events in coastal and northeastern areas before conditions stabilize completely.
