Monsoon floods and landslides kill 19 across India and Nepal

Severe weather conditions swept across India and Nepal on Wednesday, unleashing torrential downpours that spawned widespread flooding and mudslides. Authorities reported at least 15 deaths in India, with another four fatalities recorded in neighbouring Nepal as water levels surged across multiple river systems.

The disaster struck states and districts already grappling with the monsoon season's intensity. In India's eastern regions, residents were evacuated from low-lying areas as rivers swelled beyond critical thresholds. Nepal's mountainous terrain proved particularly vulnerable to landslides triggered by the relentless rain, hampering rescue and relief efforts.

Search and rescue teams deployed across both nations to locate 10 workers reported missing in the aftermath of the floods and landslides. Authorities cautioned that death tolls could rise as damage assessments continued in remote and inaccessible areas affected by the weather system.

The monsoon season, which runs through September and October, regularly brings heavy precipitation to South Asia. However, the intensity and scale of this week's deluge underscores the region's vulnerability to extreme weather patterns and the challenges posed by terrain and infrastructure limitations in mountainous areas.
