Heavy monsoon downpours triggered a series of weather-related incidents across Kerala's railway network on Tuesday, with the most significant being the derailment of a locomotive on the Bilaspur-Tirunelveli Superfast Express near Parassala station.
The locomotive of the express train left the tracks following the extreme weather conditions, prompting immediate intervention by railway authorities. The incident occurred as the region experienced substantial rainfall that also caused minor landslips at several locations along the railway corridor and adjoining areas.
Railway officials confirmed that no passengers or railway personnel sustained injuries in the derailment. However, the incident has substantially disrupted train services along the busy Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil route, one of the key rail corridors in South Kerala. Authorities have initiated efforts to clear the affected section and restore normal operations.
The derailment adds to mounting concerns over infrastructure vulnerability during the monsoon season. Railway authorities have indicated that restoration work is underway, with services expected to resume once safety assessments are completed and the damaged section is cleared. Passengers have been advised to check with railway authorities for updated travel information.
