Month-long Luzon deluge kills over 30 as rains persist

MANILA — Weeks of torrential rain and severe weather have devastated Luzon, leaving a death toll exceeding 30 people, authorities confirmed over the weekend. The fatalities underscore the mounting human cost of the extended wet season, which has been amplified by four separate weather systems battering the region throughout the month.
Among those killed in the latest round of disasters were nine members of the indigenous Aeta community across Zambales and Pampanga provinces, along with two workers at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, officials reported Saturday. Landslides triggered by saturated soil conditions have proven particularly deadly in upland areas, while flooding continues to inundate lowland communities.
The convergence of the southwest monsoon with successive tropical disturbances has created dangerous conditions, with rainfall exceeding normal seasonal averages. Rescue and relief operations remain ongoing as authorities brace for additional precipitation in the coming days. Provincial governments have activated emergency response teams and evacuation centers to shelter displaced families.
The repeated weather events have also destroyed crops, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted essential services across multiple provinces. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone and landslide-susceptible areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation advisories as weather conditions remain unstable.
