Arber Xhekaj is embracing an expanding role with the Montreal Canadiens as the team looks to bolster its defensive depth. The defenceman has been increasingly featured in the club's penalty-killing unit, a development that reflects coach Martin St-Louis's growing confidence in his abilities on the ice.
St-Louis has publicly acknowledged Xhekaj's recent performances, indicating that the young defender is making a meaningful contribution to the team's efforts. The assignment to penalty-kill duties represents a significant step in Xhekaj's development within the organization, as such responsibilities are typically reserved for players who have demonstrated reliability and tactical awareness.
The Canadiens are also preparing for changes to their roster composition. Defenceman David Reinbacher is set to return to action in an upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Sabres, adding another option to Montreal's defensive lineup. The return of Reinbacher, combined with Xhekaj's emerging role, suggests the team is working to establish consistency across its backend positions as the season progresses.
The developments underscore St-Louis's strategy of nurturing younger talent while maintaining competitive performance. As Xhekaj continues to gain experience and responsibilities, his trajectory within the organization will likely depend on sustaining the quality he has demonstrated in recent performances.
