More than half of Singapore residents pursued publicly funded degrees

More than half of Singapore's resident population has pursued a publicly funded university degree at some point in their lives, according to findings released in 2025.

The data reveals that 54% of residents engaged in publicly funded tertiary education, with participation split between two distinct groups. Fresh school leavers accounted for approximately 44% of this cohort, representing the traditional pathway from secondary education directly into university.

The remaining 10% comprised adult learners who pursued university degrees later in their lives, highlighting a growing trend of lifelong learning and mid-career skill enhancement among Singapore's workforce. This segment reflects broader patterns of career transitions and the pursuit of further qualifications beyond initial schooling.

The figures underscore Singapore's emphasis on accessible higher education and the population's engagement with formal tertiary qualifications. The inclusion of adult learners in the overall statistics suggests increasing recognition of the need for continuous educational development across different life stages in the city-state's economy.
