Authorities in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested five people in a case involving the alleged trafficking of a 1.5-month-old child, police said on Tuesday. The arrests include the infant's mother, a doctor, the physician's wife, and two other individuals implicated in the scheme.
According to police investigations, the mother received 130,000 rupees for surrendering her newborn son. A couple from Hathras allegedly purchased the child for 200,000 rupees, marking a significant price differential in the illicit transaction. The exact circumstances of how the remaining amount was distributed among the arrested individuals remains under investigation.
The case unraveled when authorities discovered that reports of the child's abduction were fabricated to provide a false cover for the sale. Police have not yet clarified how the deception was initially reported or what prompted the investigation that led to the arrests.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable infants in the region. Officials have launched a comprehensive inquiry to determine the full extent of the operation and whether other cases involving the arrested individuals might exist. The welfare of the recovered child is being overseen by child protection authorities.
