Motor traders propose vehicle length as COE classification metric

The Motor Traders Association has put forward a new proposal to refine Singapore's COE classification system, recommending that vehicle length be used as a primary metric to distinguish mass-market cars from non-mass-market ones.

The suggestion comes as the Land Transport Authority conducts a broader review of the COE categorisation framework, which has long been used to manage vehicle ownership and pricing in Singapore's highly regulated automotive market. Industry stakeholders have flagged concerns that the current system does not adequately differentiate between vehicles based on their market positioning and consumer accessibility.

Under the existing COE structure, vehicles are typically categorised into different classes that determine their eligibility and permit costs. The proposed use of vehicle length as a classification criterion would provide a more objective, measurable standard for segmentation compared to current methods, potentially making the system more transparent and easier to administer.

The LTA's review reflects ongoing efforts to balance Singapore's road space constraints with consumer demand and the automotive sector's commercial interests. Any changes to the COE framework would require careful consideration of their impact on vehicle pricing, ownership patterns, and transportation policy objectives.
