MP pushes for higher income threshold in Malaysian welfare assessment

Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament Syerleena Abdul Rashid has called for the government to adopt RM2,705 as the benchmark income level for welfare assistance eligibility. She argues the current RM1,236 threshold inadequately addresses household expenses beyond food.

MP pushes for higher income threshold in Malaysian welfare assessment

The parliamentarian has raised concerns about the sufficiency of Malaysia's existing welfare income assessment criteria, contending that the present RM1,236 figure fails to account for essential living costs faced by vulnerable households.

Syerleena pointed out that while the current benchmark ostensibly covers food expenses, it neglects substantial outgoings including rental payments, utility bills, and other fundamental household requirements. This gap in the assessment methodology, she suggested, leaves eligible families without adequate support to meet their basic needs.

By proposing RM2,705 as an alternative income threshold, the Bukit Bendera MP seeks to broaden the eligibility criteria for welfare programmes and ensure more comprehensive assistance to households struggling with cost-of-living pressures. The suggestion reflects growing concerns among policymakers about whether existing welfare frameworks adequately address the full spectrum of household expenditures in contemporary Malaysia.

The proposal adds to ongoing policy discussions regarding the adequacy of social safety nets and targeted assistance programmes for lower-income Malaysians, particularly as living costs continue to rise across the country.
