MP Rajapaksa's secretary released on bail in graft investigation

The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on Monday granted bail to Sanjaya Samarasinghe, secretary to Colombo MP Namal Rajapaksa, who had been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Samarasinghe was released on two surety bails valued at Rs. 1 million each, court records showed. The magistrate imposed a travel ban preventing the accused from departing Sri Lanka while investigations proceed.

The arrest and bail hearing are part of ongoing anti-corruption operations by CIABOC, which investigates allegations of bribery and corrupt conduct against public officials and their associates. Details regarding the specific allegations against Samarasinghe were not immediately disclosed by the investigating authority.

The case adds to scrutiny surrounding members of the ruling administration as anti-corruption agencies intensify their operations across government institutions. Samarasinghe is required to report to CIABOC as directed pending further proceedings in the matter.
