MP to source additional power from Punjab, UP as deficit widens

Madhya Pradesh, traditionally a power surplus state, is turning to neighbouring states to meet rising electricity demand. The early spike in consumption has been driven by inadequate rainfall, reduced hydroelectric generation, and operational issues at thermal plants.

MP to source additional power from Punjab, UP as deficit widens

Madhya Pradesh is set to procure additional power from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh as the state grapples with an unexpected shortfall in electricity supply. The demand surge, initially anticipated to materialise in November, has materialised earlier than forecasted, straining the state's power infrastructure.

The early rise in consumption has been attributed to multiple factors. Deficient rainfall across the region has significantly impacted hydroelectric generation, reducing the available renewable energy output. Simultaneously, several thermal power plants have reported technical snags, limiting their capacity to bridge the supply gap. Coal shortages have further compounded the situation, restricting the generation capacity of coal-fired facilities.

Madhya Pradesh, which has historically maintained a power surplus position, has been forced to seek external supply arrangements to manage the unanticipated demand increase. The arrangement with Punjab and Uttar Pradesh is expected to provide the necessary buffer to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state.

The situation underscores the vulnerabilities in India's power sector, particularly the dependence on rainfall-dependent hydroelectric sources and the challenges posed by supply chain disruptions in coal availability. State authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure stable power distribution to consumers and industries.
