MP warns against sharing Kuching school attack videos online

KUCHING, Oct 22 — Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has urged the public and media outlets to refrain from sharing videos related to a recent attack at a Kuching school, warning that such distribution could trigger copycat incidents.

The MP expressed concern that the circulation of attack footage on social media and messaging platforms may glorify violence and inadvertently inspire similar acts. He emphasised the responsibility of both traditional and digital media in exercising restraint when covering sensitive incidents involving schools and public safety.

Dr Yii's appeal comes as authorities investigate the incident. He called on members of the public to support law enforcement efforts by reporting relevant information to police rather than amplifying the footage through online channels.

The MP's statement reflects growing concern among policymakers across the region regarding the role of social media in amplifying violent incidents and the potential psychological impact on the community, particularly young people.
