MPC members must exercise independent judgment, says Goyal
Monetary Policy Committee members should think autonomously rather than align with RBI positions, according to external member Ashima Goyal. She emphasized that the inflation-targeting framework provides adequate flexibility to distinguish between temporary and persistent price pressures.

External member of the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee Ashima Goyal has stressed the importance of independent thinking among panel members, arguing that the MPC's structure is designed to enable such autonomy.
Goyal said the inflation-targeting band framework grants the committee sufficient flexibility to differentiate between transient food price fluctuations and underlying inflationary trends. This distinction is critical for formulating appropriate monetary policy responses, she indicated.
The remarks underscore ongoing discussions about the MPC's operational independence and decision-making dynamics. The six-member committee comprises three RBI officials and three external experts tasked with steering India's monetary policy toward the central bank's 4 per cent inflation target, with a permissible band of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
Goyal's comments reflect broader conversations about balancing institutional perspectives with individual expertise within India's monetary policy framework. The emphasis on independent judgment among external members is seen as essential for robust policy deliberations and credible decision-making that serves broader economic interests.
