MPs must honour voter mandate, serve until next election: Bersih

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) has stressed that elected representatives have a fundamental responsibility to serve out their full terms, regardless of internal party dynamics or leadership changes.

In a statement addressing the resignation of a Member of Parliament representing Petaling Jaya, the electoral watchdog emphasised that citizens cast their votes based on a mandate that extends to the next general election. The departure of an MP before the natural conclusion of a parliamentary term undermines this democratic contract, Bersih argued.

The organisation contended that voters should not be penalised through by-elections or political instability triggered by individual MPs stepping down due to factional disputes within their parties. Such departures impose financial costs on the electoral commission and create unnecessary disruption to constituency representation.

Bersih's position reflects broader concerns about parliamentary stability and the principle that elected officials serve at the pleasure of their constituents, not merely at the discretion of party machinery. The watchdog's statement underscores calls for greater accountability and commitment from lawmakers to complete their terms in office.

General Election 16 (GE16) is expected to take place before late 2025, based on Malaysia's constitutional five-year electoral cycle.
