MPs propose food redistribution scheme to tackle Singapore waste crisis

Singapore's Parliament has heard calls for more comprehensive strategies to address food waste and enhance the nation's resilience in food supply. The multi-pronged approach, outlined by a dozen MPs, reflects growing concern about the amount of edible food discarded daily across the country's extensive hawker centre network.

Among the key suggestions is a coordinated redistribution system that would channel surplus food from hawker stalls to vulnerable populations and food assistance programmes. Proponents argue such an initiative would simultaneously tackle food insecurity, reduce landfill burden, and create a more efficient use of resources across Singapore's food sector.

The proposals extend beyond redistribution efforts. MPs have also recommended measures to strengthen local food production capabilities, improve supply chain resilience, and encourage consumer awareness about food waste. These recommendations underscore Parliament's broader focus on building systemic redundancy in Singapore's food security framework.

Food resilience has emerged as a priority policy area for the city-state, which imports approximately 90 per cent of its food supply. Policymakers have increasingly recognised the need for multi-faceted approaches that combine waste reduction, local production initiatives, and strategic stockpiling to ensure stable food access during disruptions.

The recommendations are expected to inform ongoing government consultations on food security strategy, though no immediate timeline for implementation has been announced.
