MTUC pushes for RM3,100 minimum wage in 2027 budget

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has formally requested that the minimum wage be increased to RM3,100 as part of the 2027 federal budget, citing the need for workers to cope with rising living costs across the country.

The union federation has outlined a phased approach to wage enhancement, recommending that government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) pioneer the implementation of improved wage structures. This strategy would position these entities as benchmarks for corporate responsibility in the private sector.

MTUC believes that leading by example through the public sector would create momentum for broader wage improvements across Malaysia's private sector. The confederation argues that government-linked entities, which operate with public resources and mandates, should demonstrate commitment to worker welfare by adopting higher wage standards ahead of other employers.

The proposal reflects ongoing discussions about wage adequacy in Malaysia, where workers' organisations continue to advocate for salary levels that better reflect economic conditions and household expenses. The submission of the RM3,100 minimum wage request coincides with government budget deliberations for the upcoming fiscal year.
