MTUC Sarawak backs round-the-clock worker protection scheme

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak has thrown its support behind a comprehensive 24-hour worker protection scheme, recognising its potential to provide crucial financial security to workers and their dependents.

MTUC Sarawak chairman Zaidi Nasar said the scheme addresses a critical gap in existing worker protections by extending coverage beyond traditional working hours. "This scheme is important to help workers and their families manage financial risks should accidents occur outside of work," Nadir said.

The round-the-clock protection framework is designed to mitigate the financial burden on workers and their households when unforeseen accidents strike during non-working hours, a period typically left uncovered by standard workplace insurance arrangements.

The union's endorsement comes as worker safety and financial protection remain key concerns for labour organisations across Malaysia. The scheme represents an effort to broaden the safety net available to workers, particularly in addressing gaps in existing compensation mechanisms.

MTUC Sarawak's backing of the initiative underscores growing recognition within the labour movement of the need for comprehensive protection schemes that extend beyond conventional working arrangements and schedules.
