Muji, the minimalist lifestyle goods retailer, disclosed on Thursday that customer payment card details may have been exposed in a recent cyberattack targeting its systems. The company said it discovered unauthorized access to its network and is investigating the extent of the breach.
Electronics retailer Bic Camera subsequently announced it may also have been affected by the same attack. Both companies have notified relevant authorities and begun notifying potentially impacted customers, though neither has disclosed the specific number of records at risk.
The breach adds to mounting concerns over data security among major retail chains in the region. Both Muji and Bic Camera operate extensive networks across Asia, including stores in Singapore and neighbouring countries, serving millions of customers regularly.
The retailers have advised affected customers to monitor their credit card statements for unauthorized transactions and consider fraud protection measures. Payment card networks have been alerted to flag suspicious activity. Both companies are working with cybersecurity experts to strengthen their systems and prevent future incidents.
Muji and Bic Camera said they would provide further updates as their investigations progress.
