Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is moving ahead with plans to consolidate domestic flight operations at Terminal 1, a decision that would result in the reduction of 265 weekly international departure slots at Terminal 2. The airport operator argues the reorganisation is necessary to optimise capacity utilisation across its facilities as passenger traffic rebounds in India's busiest aviation hub.
However, the proposal has drawn sharp criticism from airlines operating at the airport. Industry representatives contend that forcing a shift of international operations to the yet-to-be-fully-operational Navi Mumbai International Airport would disrupt their schedules and impose significant operational costs at a time when carriers are still recovering from pandemic-related losses.
The disagreement reflects broader tensions over India's strategy to distribute air traffic across multiple airport hubs in the Mumbai region. While MIAL maintains that the move aligns with long-term capacity planning for the metropolitan area, airlines have expressed concerns about connectivity and the readiness of alternative facilities to handle major international routes.
The dispute comes as India's aviation sector continues to expand, with international travel demand accelerating. Industry observers note that resolving the standoff will require coordination between airport authorities, airlines, and aviation regulators to ensure seamless passenger services and operational efficiency across the region's airport network.
Neither MIAL nor representatives from the airline industry have publicly outlined potential compromise positions, though discussions are understood to be ongoing between the stakeholders.
