Mumbai airport to begin Terminal 1 demolition from mid-January 2027
Adani-operated Mumbai International Airport will commence partial demolition of its aging Terminal 1 from January 15, 2027, as part of a major redevelopment programme. The airport operator has already begun redistributing flight operations to Terminal 2 and the new Navi Mumbai facility.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has notified India's civil aviation ministry that demolition of the North Section of Terminal 1-B will commence on January 15, 2027, marking the first phase of the terminal's comprehensive redevelopment.
Terminal 1, which is nearly eight decades old, currently operates alongside Terminal 2 at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The ageing facility handles approximately 15 million passengers annually, compared to Terminal 2's 40 million capacity. Portions of Terminal 1 have already undergone demolition as part of earlier phases of the modernisation initiative.
MIAL has initiated the gradual redistribution of air traffic away from the older terminal to accommodate the demolition work. Flight operations are being shifted to Terminal 2 and the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport. The airport currently processes over 950 daily flight movements and maintains a total passenger handling capacity exceeding 50 million annually.
The redevelopment of Terminal 1 represents a significant infrastructure modernisation project for one of India's busiest aviation hubs. The phased approach will allow the airport to maintain operational continuity while upgrading its facilities to meet growing air traffic demands.
