The redevelopment of Terminal 1B's north section represents a significant infrastructure investment for India's busiest aviation hub. The expansion project will increase the facility's capacity by approximately 33 percent, addressing growing passenger traffic at the airport and enhancing operational efficiency during peak travel periods.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with the northern section undergoing comprehensive upgrades to accommodate additional passenger flows. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize Mumbai airport's infrastructure and maintain its competitive standing among South Asian aviation centers.

The capacity increase from 15 million to 20 million passengers per annum reflects sustained growth in domestic and international air travel through the airport. The expansion is expected to improve passenger experience through enhanced facilities and reduced congestion during busy hours.

Terminal 1B currently serves both full-service carriers and budget airlines, with the redevelopment aimed at strengthening the terminal's role in the airport's overall network. The project underscores India's commitment to scaling airport infrastructure to support economic growth and increased connectivity across the region.
