Mumbai airport to proceed with summer 2027 capacity cuts despite carrier concerns

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has doubled down on its capacity reduction plan for summer 2027, maintaining the timeline despite pushback from airlines operating at the congested facility. The airport operator has stated that carriers will have flexibility in deciding their operational strategy as the facility undergoes upgrades to its infrastructure.

Under the proposal, Mumbai airport will reduce its passenger handling capacity by 5 million annually starting summer 2027. The reduction is necessary as the airport undertakes construction and modernisation works to enhance facilities. Airlines have been given the option to either shift their flights to the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport or explore alternative operational solutions during the transition period.

The announcement comes as the aviation industry grapples with capacity constraints at India's busiest airports. Several carriers have raised concerns about the operational disruptions and costs associated with relocating routes, though MIAL has indicated that the measure is essential for maintaining service quality and airport infrastructure standards.

MIAL officials have emphasised that the decision aims to balance growth with operational efficiency. The airport has been in discussions with stakeholders to minimise disruption, though the shift remains non-negotiable from a planning and maintenance perspective. The Navi Mumbai airport is expected to become operational by late 2026, potentially offering relief to airlines seeking alternative capacity.
