Mumbai Battles Sharp Rise in Dengue Cases as Weather Turns Favourable for Mosquitoes

Mumbai is witnessing a significant uptick in dengue fever cases, with infections climbing 28 percent as meteorological conditions favour mosquito proliferation across the metropolis. The combination of warm temperatures and high humidity levels has created optimal circumstances for Aedes mosquitoes to breed, particularly in areas where stagnant water accumulates.

The seasonal spike underscores the persistent public health challenge dengue poses in urban India, where rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage systems create persistent breeding sites. Monsoon and post-monsoon periods typically see heightened transmission, though the precise timing and intensity vary annually based on rainfall patterns and temperature fluctuations.

Municipal authorities and health officials have initiated enhanced surveillance and vector control operations in affected localities. Residents are being advised to eliminate standing water in and around homes, ensure proper waste management, and seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms including fever, headache, muscle pain, and rash.

Dengue, transmitted by mosquito bites, can range from mild febrile illness to severe dengue haemorrhagic fever in some cases. With no specific cure available, prevention through mosquito control and early detection remain the primary strategies for managing outbreaks in the city.
