Mumbai Chokes Under Heavy Smog as Air Quality Index Hits Unhealthy Levels

A dense layer of smog has settled over Mumbai, with air quality measurements indicating hazardous conditions for the city's residents. The Air Quality Index recorded at 198 falls firmly in the "poor" category, well above safe thresholds established by environmental agencies. Visibility across key areas, including the Bandra Reclamation waterfront, has been significantly reduced due to the atmospheric haze.

The deterioration in air quality typically results from a combination of factors including vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, construction dust, and seasonal weather patterns that trap pollutants closer to ground level. During this period, atmospheric conditions have been conducive to the accumulation and stagnation of harmful particulates, creating the visible smog that has blanketed the city.

Health experts caution that prolonged exposure to air with a poor AQI can pose serious risks, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, elderly residents, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiac conditions. Symptoms associated with poor air quality include throat irritation, coughing, shortness of breath, and aggravation of asthma and bronchitis. The general population is also advised to limit outdoor activities during periods of acute air pollution.

Residents have been recommended to use air purifiers indoors, wear N95 masks when venturing outside, and monitor daily air quality updates. Environmental authorities continue to track pollution levels as meteorological conditions may influence the duration and intensity of the current air quality crisis affecting India's commercial hub.
