Mumbai cinema tickets face steep price rise under BMC tax proposal

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed a significant increase in entertainment tax on cinema halls, potentially raising ticket prices by up to Rs 510. The proposal awaits state government approval before implementation.

The BMC's proposed entertainment tax hike would substantially increase the cost of watching movies in Mumbai's cinemas. Under the new proposal, the tax on air-conditioned cinemas and multiplexes would jump from Rs 60 per show to Rs 400 per show—a more than sixfold increase that would directly impact ticket prices charged to consumers.

The magnitude of the proposed tax increase has raised concerns among cinema operators and moviegoers alike. If implemented in full, the additional tax burden could translate into ticket price increases of approximately Rs 510 per show, depending on how theatre operators pass the costs to consumers. Currently, ticket prices in Mumbai's multiplexes range widely based on location and timing, but such a dramatic tax increase would likely necessitate corresponding price adjustments across the board.

The BMC proposal requires approval from the Maharashtra state government before it can be implemented. The move comes as the civic body seeks to increase revenue from various sources within its jurisdiction. Cinema halls, a significant entertainment sector in Mumbai, have not seen substantial tax revisions in recent years, making this proposal a notable departure from existing policy.

Industry analysts suggest the proposal could impact attendance at cinemas, particularly among price-sensitive moviegoers. Theatre owners are expected to submit formal objections to the BMC during the consultation period, arguing that such steep tax increases could dampen consumer demand and affect the cinema business in India's entertainment capital.
