Mumbai civic body denies mandatory fitness certificates for Ganesh idols

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday denied claims circulating on social media regarding mandatory fitness certificates and tracking systems for Ganesh idols during the upcoming festival season. A BMC spokesperson stated that no such new regulations had been introduced, and the civic body was merely continuing its standard safety and coordination procedures.

The denial comes after viral reports suggested the BMC would require idols to undergo fitness certification before installation and tracking throughout their placement. Such reports had raised concerns among devotees and organisers about potential bureaucratic hurdles during preparations for the popular Ganesh festival.

The BMC reiterated its commitment to facilitating smooth idol installations while maintaining public safety standards. The civic body said it works closely with community groups, housing societies, and pandal organisers to ensure adequate space, proper drainage, and safe immersion procedures. Officials emphasised that existing guidelines focus on coordination and safety rather than imposing new administrative requirements on devotees.

The clarification aims to address public concerns ahead of the festival season, which sees thousands of Ganesh idol installations across the city. The BMC said it remains available to assist organisers with permissions and logistical support through established channels.
