Mumbai civic body funds well restoration as water security concerns mount

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has finalized a comprehensive well rejuvenation programme, allocating ₹30 lakh per ward to restore the city's groundwater infrastructure. The move comes as municipal authorities grapple with persistent water supply challenges and seek to maximize available water resources.

The rehabilitation initiative will encompass multiple restoration stages, beginning with the removal of stagnant water accumulated in wells across residential and commercial areas. Following drainage, civic teams will conduct thorough cleaning operations to remove sediment, debris, and contaminants, ensuring wells are restored to functional condition.

The programme also includes installation of functional pumping systems in rejuvenated wells, enabling efficient water extraction and distribution. Officials have determined standardized rates for these rejuvenation services to ensure uniform implementation across all municipal wards.

The civic body's decision reflects growing recognition of the need to diversify water sources beyond traditional supply systems. Well restoration projects are increasingly viewed as a supplementary measure to address seasonal water shortages and reduce dependence on external supply lines.
